Sunday of a long weekend

Got to sleep in this morning as we had a late night, David made a lovely breakfast of homemade pancakes and bacon.

Had a lazy morning and then in the afternoon went for a drive.

Close to us is a very small village that I have driven through before, I have wanted to go back as there is an abandoned railway station.

It opened on July 19th 1860 servicing London to the South West.  It closed on March 7th 1966 due to increased car ownership and reduction in train travel.

The station building has since become a private residence.

One line remains open which services the Exeter/ Waterloo line.

The footbridge from the island platform still exists and the platform is still visible if not overgrown.

It has an incredible eery feel about it, certainly a  place I wouldn’t want to be on a dark night, it is very overgrown and not a place many now go which is obvious from the overgrowth surrounding the station and found on the far side of footbridge.

  1. Oh my goodness, what a cool story and place! You’re right though, this doesn’t look like a good place to be after dark, too eerie! Love the perspective and the way you can see the overgrowth on the line.

    • Thank you Deborah, it so interesting, the more time we spent there the more I wanted to know about it. Just up the road is a very old house, originally built in the 1300’s and owned by families connected to Henry VIII. Some beheaded for treachery, we are going to do a tour when they allow visitors, it only opens a few times a year for viewings. I have a mild addiction for history since we have been in the UK, not so much to visit historically in Canada, a little new compared to Europe 😉
